The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read answers a big need. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 report by the NEA, found that not only is literary reading in America declining rapidly among all groups, but that rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young. The concerned citizen in search of good news about American literary culture would study the pages of this report in vain. Audio Guides for the books include commentary from renowned artists, educators, and public figures, and now the public has the opportunity to use this important and fun resource. Downloadable OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks The Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) office has some news that we are pleased to share. At long last ListenNJNW.org has added OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to our Downloadable Media Collection which allow iPod®, iPhone™, and iPod Touch compatibility!
What does this mean for those of you who have digital audiobook readers? More of you can now download audiobooks to your portable devices. Please note that those of you who previously inquired about iPod capability when we first offered this service but may no longer be checking the ListenNJNW website.
As with any collection we’re starting out small, so it’s important that patrons are encouraged to keep checking back for new titles as the collection grows.
For your information there are links to all the MP3 titles, the original WMA titles, and to ALL downloadable audiobooks on the homepage of the ListenNJNW website. Collectively there are 1269 unique titles 135 in the new format-- with more titles added on a regular basis.
